Columbia Road and Birthdays

Created by Lynda 3 years ago

I came to know Rose when Gil moved next door in Goff’s Lane.  It was always a pleasure to visit as she made everyone so welcome.
We had a particular connection as Rose had lived in Quilter Street, Bethnal Green.   In researching my family history I had discovered that my great grandfather Samuel Kilbey lived around the corner in Wellington Row.  The area, previously slums, had been rebuilt in the 1860s along with the Columbia Road and Columbia Market.  I would visit Columbia Road quite often and take photographs for Rose of her old school and the flower market. Viewing the photos would lead to lively chats about her childhood and teenage years in Bethnal Green.
Birthday parties in the garden were another opportunity to take photographs.  Rose loved “a bit of a do” particularly when it could be in the garden surrounded by her friends and family. The Lemon and Elderflower Drizzle Cake for Rose’s 99th birthday turned out to be a favourite for future parties.
Dear Rose - missed but not forgotten.
